I have resigned myself to simply use WLM Plus! and Skype. I decided that if people can't put in the effort to install and use a sensible mainstream chat client, I can't put in the effort to talk to them

And Kian, in response to "i don't like messenger plus that much in the first place so its not a terrible loss", why do you dislike it? I only see it as adding more features that should have been there in the first place (coloured names, sounds, tabbed chats, chat log encryption, slash commands, quick icon panel, polygamy, UI themes, messages in font colours other than the default selection of 12, notification when someone signs out). It has become pretty standard and mainstream now, to the point where I automatically assume someone has it until I find out otherwise.

I assume combined chat clients like Pidgin incorporate most of the UI improvements, but definitely not things like sounds (something that has been in Yahoo Messenger for years!). Currently, without WLM Plus! the only way I can send a sound to someone is if I log out of WLM, disable ALL sound recording devices other than Stereo Mix (forcing Stereo Mix to be the only one available to WLM), sign back in, play the sound through the speakers, record a voice clip, sign back out of WLM again and re-enable my microphone, then sign back in again. This is a LOT of hassle. It also results in a low-quality recording.

My only annoyance about Plus! is that Microsoft isn't in charge, so the sounds server gets filled up frequently and sending sounds becomes buggy. This is due to a lack of donations to the server owner as he is unable to run the number of servers required.

I always play ORCS as I have not learned how to play other races

I do not deem Pidgin a suitable replacement to WLM if you cannot send sounds or use coloured display names indeed!
